CAD is always a nice way to effectively show engine internals, but there’s something to be said for a physical cutaway.

We have a number of these around the office and looking at them never gets old. Coolest is a 5.4L from a Ford GT...supercharger and dry sump system included.

Cadillac had a great one at the New York International Auto Show this year

wish I could get some pics of the 6.7 Powerstroke cutaway in the next building. it’s seriously freaky how they did the inside out exhaust/intake.

Damn, now that’s one hell of a cutaway! Seeing that would never get old.

Now I’m curious, I’ll have to look at see what cutaways I can find thanks to Google, but even that won’t fully illustrate it. And here I’d figured simpler was the best way to go on a diesel engine...

The exhaust manifold design looks more like something I’d find on a high-performance racing engine. And the valve covers - they look like they have some kind of perforated baffling. Curious design.

So, a little Google searching produced this:

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t even know what to think about that design. I’ve got the 6.0L in my truck, thinking about the placement of the 6.7L in the engine bay, as designed...that must give service techs nightmares.

suprisingly, it’s supposedly easier to work on than the 6.0 and 6.4 were.

Supposedly. anyway, the real neat trick I think comes from this:

Kinja'd!!!

See how weird the valve covers look? It’s because they double as the intake manifolds. Air blows from the turbo up to the intercooler, then comes back and flows to the two inlet ports at the top of the engine there, then through the runners cast into the valve covers, finally to the intake ports on the outboard sides of the cylinder heads.

Given the amount of time spent on the development of that engine, that must have been one of the best solutions they could have come up with. That’s quite the departure from the conventional logic of having the intake runners nestled in the vee between the cylinder heads and seems to be working well enough.

Interesting design, truly interesting design.
